10 DIY Halloween Costumes With T-Shirts and Sweatshirts - Threadsy

Nicole Rollender |

If you’re trying to decide what to wear for Halloween, why not DIY your costume? We’ve got you covered with 10 easy, no-sew homemade ideas. Just check in your closet (or browse Threadsy) for t-shirts and hoodies to use as the base for these fun costumes. Whether you’re in the mood to be a scary skeleton or a cute juice box, read on to learn how to DIY these costumes with our handy product recommendations.

The 10 Easiest DIY Costumes

Here are our ideas about how to take a basic t-shirt or sweatshirt and create a DIY Halloween costume, all in one place!

1. A Cute Juice Box

Creating a juice box costume can be really simple and a good idea if you don’t have a lot of time to shop. This costume hinges on an A-line dress, an oversize t-shirt or a long body shirt, preferably monochromatic and in a bright color. This serves as the box. The next item is what makes it a bit more obvious as a juice box.

Take a large white piece of cardboard or poster board and roll it into a tube. Secure it to itself with tape at first. Next, shape the end to be round to look like a straw. Once you have the tube looking like a straw, you should secure it with tape or glue. To take this up a notch, you could put the “straw” into a clear “pouch” by using cellophane or saran wrap over the “straw.” Affix both to the front of your dress and you’re now a juice box!

If you really like this idea and want a group look, create school lunch box items by adding to what you have in your closet. You can make a chocolate chip cookie from an A-line dress (or long shirt) that’s brown or beige. Tape small not-perfectly-round black or dark brown pieces of construction paper to the dress the way you would see chocolate chips on a cookie. Voila!

You can also create an apple to go with your school lunch. Have a red, light green, or yellow A-line dress or long shirt? Cut white paper into a small semi-circle, then use black construction paper to cut out a very small round “seeds” for the white part, which helps to identify your dress as an apple. Place it to the side almost even with your elbow. You can even take this up a notch by creating a stem headband for your head!

Product Recommendation: Check out the LA T Ladies' Racerback Tank Dress in Caribbean/White or the Bella + Canvas Men's Long Body Urban T-Shirt in Heather Olive.

2. Spooky Skeleton Costume

You’re going to love how easy this skeleton costume is to make, but how scarily real it looks! Begin by drawing diagonal lines on both sides of the front of your white t-shirt. Draw a triangle at the top of the ribs, right under the shirt collar. Those lines will be the top and spaces between the rib bones. Next, roughly cut the shapes out. Don’t worry – they don’t need to be perfect. You can also cut the top of the t-shirt neck and sleeves at the seams for a tattered look.

Put your black hoodie on, and layer the t-shirt over it! Add some skeleton face makeup and pull the hood over your head. Insta-scary skeleton!

3. Easy ‘Deviled’ Egg Costume

Continuing with our easy theme: the deviled egg costume. To begin this project, you need a white shirt. That’s right, a simple white T-shirt. Attach a yellow “egg” shape to the front of your shirt. Add a devil horn hair band and a red horned tail to complete the look. It’s that simple!

Product Recommendation: Check out the Hanes Adult Essential-T T-Shirt as a base white unsiex shirt for this costume!

4. Easiest Hawaiian Tourist Costume

Just got from Hawaii? It’s not much easier than taking your existing Hawaiian T-shirt (or borrowing your dad’s) and adding a straw hat with a lei which you can likely find at a dollar store. If you don’t have a Hawaiian shirt and want to get creative, grab a tropically colored t-shirt and decorate it to your heart’s content with embroidered, printed or fabric flowers!

Product Recommendations: For her, try on the Gildan Ladies' Heavy Cotton T-Shirt in Light Pink. For him, we like the Bella + Canvas Unisex Triblend T-Shirt in Mint Triblend. For a more subtle look, try the LA T Men's Fine Jersey T-Shirt in Bamboo Blackout.

5. Easy Rosie the Riveter Costume

Do you have a denim shirt? Pair it with a red bandana to create the iconic Rosie the Riveter character in real life.

Product Recommendation: You’re in luck with the UltraClub Ladies' Cypress Denim in Indigo. Just roll up the sleeves and you’re ready to go!

6. Low On Time? Easy ‘Chip on Your Shoulder’ Costume

This costume takes two items you likely have at home right now – a bright, monochromatic t-shirt (preferably in the same color as the next item) and a snack bag of chips. If you have a bright yellow shirt to go with the bright yellow bag of Lay’s snack size chips, then you’ve got a costume!

Just tape the bag of chips to your shoulder and you’re good to go. You may want to affix the chips after you drive, if you’re driving to a party. Take this up a notch by opening the bag and having a few chips glued or taped to your shoulder. Be prepared to make a mess!

Product Recommendations: For an adult bag of chips, we like the Gildan Adult Ultra Cotton® T-Shirt in Cornsilk. For kids, check out the Hanes Youth 50/50 T-Shirt in Yellow.

7. Awkward School Photo Costume

For this project, you’re going for supreme awkwardness, so a turtleneck paired with oversized eyeglasses and butterfly clips can go a long way toward “cringey.” Take this up a notch by printing an ’80s-inspired laser background to a rectangular piece of cardboard that will go slightly above your head and down the middle of your back. Keep it attached to you by using fishing wire to create shoulder straps.

Product Recommendation: Check out the UltraClub Adult Egyptian Interlock Long-Sleeve Turtleneck as part of this costume.

8. Work-From-Home Costume

Perhaps the easiest of the do-it-yourself costumes is the WFH employee costume. This costume needs what you already have and wear when at home and working. Grab a nice top and pajama bottoms – or your favorite loungewear or joggers – and comfy slippers and you’re ready to rock the look.

Product Recommendations: Try on the Jerzees Adult 8 oz., NuBlend Fleece Pullover Hooded Sweatshirt in Kelly or another fun color. Pair it with the Threadfast Apparel Unisex Ultimate Fleece Jogger Pant or the TriDri Ladies' Fitted Maria Jogger.

9. Hippie Costume

If you want to go with a laid-back, 1960s vibe, then try an easy hippie costume. You can either buy a pre-made tie-dye shirt or take a plain white t-shirt, tie it up in knots with rubber bands and then dye it. When the dye settles and you take off the rubber bands, you will have intricate swirls and patterns. Pair it with an old pair of jeans (even better if they’re bell bottoms or have patches) and represent true flower power.

Product recommendations: You’ll find lots of tie-dye options on Threadsy that come in a rainbow of colors and patterns so you can find one that matches your personality. Take a look at these t-shirt, tank and hoodie options for kids and adults:

10. Dancing Emoji Girls Costume

Do you and your best friend or sister want a great costume idea for the two of you? Dancing emoji girls are a cute and pretty easy DIY costume.
If you don’t have or want to use a black leotard, both of you will need a black T-shirt. You’ll need to coordinate to find black shorts or leggings that match and then black slippers that resemble ballerina shoes.

Don’t forget the black bunny ears! (You can usually find these at a dollar store or online). You’ll likely not find bunny ears that are black, so your next move is to spray paint the ears. Be careful as that can get messy.

Product Recommendations: To make this costume a breeze, check out the
Next Level Apparel Ladies' Ideal T-Shirt and Bella + Canvas Ladies' Cotton-Spandex Leggings, both in Black.
